I dare to say it wasn’t their fault entirely and I wish the higher culprits would be brought to justice. You’ll see in the documentary people changing just because they are exposed to a twisted system, and sometimes is easier to move along on the path of minimum resistance than speaking up. I find fascinating how the academic experiment is actually observed in real life: Standard Operating Procedure (2008), a documentary on the Abu Ghraib incident. The German version is even more faithful to the original story including the reasons for the termination of the experiment.Įven if you would expect this behavior from people, I could not imagine it would be exhibited so fast and things would spiral so fast out of control.

Leaving the movie apart, it is far more interesting to know this is based on real facts, and although hard to believe, the actual experiment went exactly on the same timeline with the movie. You mean “the experiment”? Brody did good but the movie itself wasn’t big deal… The chosen individuals are made to play the roles of both prison guards and prisoners to see how they behave in these positions. When it comes to movie viewers though, I think a few get cheated as they’ll never get to see the real deal as it get’s buried under the new shiny merchandise. A psychodrama based on the true story of a group of scientists who organized 20 people to carry out a psychological experiment for a cash reward. The movie anyway will earn big bucks, the business is rolling and the business is good. What can go wrong, worst case scenario? Economically nothing goes wrong. Then why not take a good movie and localize it for US so people don’t have to listed to foreign languages and empathize with foreigners. To me is quite simple: you need an idea with a lot of potential and ideally already proven successful. I was discussing with a friend the other day why is they copy cat phenomenon happening. The guys tried but I could not connect with them… Adrien Brody delivered a first hand acting, the movie is packaged extremely well, polished to the max, but overall it didn’t work out for me. Don’t ask why: just enjoy the bloody show.
Pretty much typical for the american version to start on the basis that the experiment goes wrong. Personally I still think the original is the best as not only being more realistic, but it does show as well what happens on the other side of the camera. And of course I went to see the american version. The german version of the movie was my favorite for many years now. The ending has its nice touches seeing how full of regret for their action the men are. Yes it is thrilling but what happens in the prison isn’t original. With two Oscar winners in Whitaker and Brody you would be expect a top movie unfortunately you don’t get one. Based on a true story of an experiment previous conducted it shows the levels man can be pushed too. Verdict This psychological thriller is one that you will want to watch to see what will happen at the end and find out what the point in the experiment is. Nothing from the outside world will be bought in The prisoners will have 30mintues rec time.ĥ. The prisoners will have three meals a dayĤ.
The prisoners will only speak when spoken too.ģ. When violence is banned can the guys make it through the time following the rules.ġ.
Chase (Gigandet) takes things to a new level but some of the other guards think things go to far. On the guards side we have Barris (Whitaker) who starts of on the nervous side but soon starts leading the guards. One man Travis befriends is Benjy (Cohn) a graphic novelist is one of his cellmates’ who struggles to make it without his insulin. Travis meets a new girl in Bay (Grace) before he starts and uses her memory to keep him sane as one of the prisoners. Travis (Brody) recently released from his job is one of these candidates. Story 26 men are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a psychological study, they have fourteen days to play out the scenario.
